2020-03-10 · What's a normal hearing level on an audiogram?

What's a normal hearing level on an audiogram? An adult is classified as having normal hearing ability if their responses indicate they heard noises between 0 and 25 dB across the frequency range. A child is considered to have hearing ability within normal limits if their responses are between 0 to 15 dB across the frequency range. An audiogram will usually show three different results: pure-tone results for the left ear, pure-tone results for the right ear and bone conduction results. The pure-tone tests for the left and right ear are the “normal” hearing test, the one where you wear a pair of headphones and are asked to press a button when you hear a sound.

Within the scientific literature, this term has most recently been used to refer specifically to the reduced amplitude of sound-evoked neural responses that occurs with loss of synapses that connect the inner hair cells (IHCs) to the auditory nerve. In other words, the patient’s audiometric difficulties are hidden behind a normal audiogram. Black represents a normal conventional audiogram for one ear in octave steps between 125 and 8,000 Hz. Red depicts a notch peaking at 2,800 Hz that is missed by octave-step testing.

A person having their hearing tested responds by pushing a button when they hear a sound. The quietest level of sound heard at each pitch is then plotted on the audiogram using a red circle for right ear and a blue cross for left ear. The position of the symbols is compared to an agreed normal hearing level of 25dB across all pitches of sound.
